Proudly Achieving Together

Cycling

Oldhill Community School has a pro-active whole-school programme of walking and cycling schemes to encourage a healthy start to the day and set good patterns of active travel for life. This is coordinated by the Transport for London’s (TFL) Schools Travel Champion and supported by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and all school staff. Oldhill Community School is registered nationally as a Bikeability Delivery Centre and maintains its own fleet of cycles for all ages and abilities.

Cycle Training is embedded in the schools motto- ‘Proudly Achieving Together’  and is delivered during class time. There are also several after school clubs run for students and family members and the local community. All children from Year 5 onwards are given Bikeability Cycle Training each year delivered by our experienced and qualified cycling staff. This is a unique project in primary schools and the children love it!!

The Chief Medical Officer recommends children undertake at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day and, unfortunately, NHS data shows that one in three UK children now leave primary school either overweight or obese, putting them at risk of health problems in later life. So the trick is to start good habits as early as possible – ideally from the first day of school life! The journey to and from school is an ideal time for children and other family members to be active together.

Moreover the benefits of cycling and walking to school are many. Not only is it good for us, it’s good for the environment – and the wallet!!
