Chair’s Message

Individual profile

I am a professional monumental sculptor and printmaker. I have 30 years experience as an artist and art technician. I am a recently elected Fellow of the Royal Anthropology Institute. I am a parent of children who attend or have attended Oldhill School. I’ve lived in Hackney for 20 years, having come from Australia to the UK to learn figure sculpture.

I have been a Governor of Oldhill School since 2014 and Chair since 2018. This year I aim to hand over to a new Chair having brought the Governing Body forward into its present state,a state more closely representing the community it serves. I am very proud to be a Governor of Oldhill School.

Chair’s Message

Welcome to Oldhill Community School

The role of the Governing Body is to provide a strategic partner to the Head Teacher and Senior Leadership of the school. The Governors provide a framework of accountability for the leadership decision making. The Borough and Government guidelines provide a toolkit
for measuring the school’s delivery of its offer against national statistics. Benchmarking allows for scrutiny of the school spending per pupil and per pupil premium pupil in order to best assess the value of the school’s priorities against its budget.

The Governing Body is made up of people who represent the staff, the Borough, parents and the local community. The membership of the Governing Body is always responding to the needs of the school and it’s journey. The skills required to be a good Governor are an ability
to listen, read documents and statistics and to be able to interpret that information in order to form questions. Asking those questions is how Governors perform their role. A good Governor speaks from their personal experience and is able to speak for the sector
of the school community they are asked to represent in their role as a link Governor. At Oldhill School we are especially mindful of those students with Special Educational Needs and those with disadvantages relating to documents or many generations of educational or
material lack.

We observe the celebrations of many cultures and are willing to learn about those that newly arrive. All Governors are offered training in preparation for their role. Anyone can become a school Governor.Everyone has something valuable to offer. We the Governors of Oldhill School aim to support the students, staff and community of Oldhill School as best we can with our current combination of life experience, skills, training and the toolkit available. We are Proudly Achieving Together.
