Our maths vision at Old Hill

At Old Hill we want our children to be independently number confident, able problem solvers and to have developed a life long love for maths.

How do we teach maths at Oldhill?

At Oldhill we are using Hackney Approach to Assessment Fundamentals to assess the children’s progress against the new National Curriculum. We are aiming for most children to be working within the fundamental targets for their year group. ‘You can view the fundamentals for each year group under the ‘Related Documents’ link on the right hand side.

Five of the fundamentals relate to the children ‘being a mathematician’, these targets focus on fluency, reasoning, communication, reflection and problem solving. We embed these targets into our daily maths lessons. Through maths, our aim is to teach the children to be creative thinkers and problem –solvers, encouraging the children to think for themselves.
We want to develop core skills in children to enable them to apply maths outside the classroom.

At Oldhill we follow the White Rose scheme of work. This scheme is a unique maths toolkit that’s carefully crafted to inspire a genuine love of maths and help every child master the national curriculum.

How can you help your child at home?

It is critical that children have a key bank of number facts to draw on when they are tackling calculations; both written and mental. You can encourage your child to practise at home by logging on to different websites designed to help children to remember these key facts.
