science At Oldhill we believe that Science is a vital part of children’s learning in order to understand the world around them, and importantly, what the world might be like in the future. We aim to provide children with a broad and exciting curriculum which inspires inquisitive thinking and exploration. We believe that children should be encouraged to challenge their ideas about the world around them, therefore questioning is at the heart of Science at Oldhill. Questioning helps children to develop paths towards understanding, a skill which can be applied across all Curriculum subjects. British Science week 2022

‘Growth’ was the theme this year for British Science week (11-20 March 2022). All staff and pupils at Oldhill Community school engaged in a range of exciting practical activities to aid learning and exploration.

EYFS – Year 2 became handy gardeners, they planted a range of seeds and observed how seeds germinate and grow.

Year 3-4 Measured the growth of spring onions to investigate how plants grow and what conditions affects them.

Year 5 explored the life process of reproduction in some plants via a range of art methods and vegetable propagation.

Year 6 Explored antibodies and viruses with origami. After, they explored engineering in a pandemic. They had a challenge to design and create a device to test different materials to find out whether they let air flow through and if they thought it would work as an air filter for a face mask.
